Diplomatic Representatives in Istanbul and Ankara 1815-2010

Since the year of 1815 until today, Serbian deputies, who stayed only for a few months, were always presented in Istanbul (Constantinople). Although the nature of those deputations was not permanent, nor did they represent the official diplomatic mission, they still took a very good care of both Serbian interests and business.

Along with the Constitution of the Principality of Serbia and the accordance with the article 18, the function of Serbian deputy was introduced, as well as the Agency which was found at the same time. The most well-known deputy was Jovan Ristić, who later became Minister of Foreign Affairs and one of the founders of the modern Serbian diplomacy.

Agency became a diplomatic representation in 1869.

After gaining its independence, Representation became a Mission of the Principality of Serbia. In the year of 1882. the name was Mission of the Principality of Serbia, then in 1919. Mission of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, and finally in 1929.  became  Mission of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. Mission was closed during the First World War.

By the decree dated on 23. 08. 1938. the status of the Mission of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia was changed to the status of an embassy. The Ambassador was Ilija Sumanovic  who served at that position  until 20.08.1945.
